FAMILY SATURDAY WORKSHOP: RAINER GANAHL

08/01/2015

The Dikeou Collection continues the Family Saturday Workshop series on August 1 from 12:00-4:00pm. This workshop will focus on artist Rainer Ganhal’s Hermès-Marx series of screen-printed vintage Hermès scarves, and will be held at the Dikeou Collection, 1615 California St, Suite 515. Workshops are free to attend with materials and light refreshments provided.

The French Hermès brand manufactures some of the highest luxury products in the world, and their line of scarves is created with exclusive designs and only the finest silk. Rainer Ganahl takes these precious items and screen-prints his own text and symbols over them, thus altering the imagery and erasing their value. Ganahl’s intention is highly political, demonstrating that the powers of production do not always define beauty and that a product is not “final” or “complete” until it is in the hands of the owner, who may do with it whatever they please.

For this workshop, participants will print their own text, symbols, and designs on to a vintage patterned scarf. Designs will be drawn on to foam sheets, cut out, painted, and then pressed on to the scarf to create an item that blends manufactured and customized imagery. This workshop will take approximately one hour to complete.

The Dikeou Collection’s Family Saturday Workshops are a great way for people of all ages to learn more about contemporary art and experiment with new creative processes. Workshops include a tutorial and presentation of the artwork highlighted that month.
