FRESH JAZZ AND CRISP VINYL SERIES WITH ORENDA
08/26/2016
The Dikeou Collection presents the sixteenth installment of the Fresh Jazz and Crisp Vinyl Series on Friday, August 26, with a special live performance by local quintet Orenda and a DJ set by David B. Smith to open and close the evening. This event is free and open to the public and will take place at Dikeou Collection, 1615 California St, Suite 515, from 7-10pm. Light refreshments will be provided.
Orenda is a five-piece instrumental powerhouse based in Denver, Colorado. This newly-imagined enemble combines elements of jazz, funk and latin musics with a dance sensibility that captivates both mind and body. The cumulative years of experience in Afro-Cuban rhythms provide deep roots as well as fresh perspectives on modern musics, resulting in an inspiring improvisational platform and an atmosphere of expressive harmony. “Orenda” is an Iriquois word that represents the “mystic power” of a shaman or force of nature, describing the ability to manifest reality through force of will. Our vision is to use our musical power to inspire and empower one other through the medium of improvisational dance music.
The ensemble includes Jake Herman on drum set/percussion, Zay Rios on congas, percussion, flutes, and vocals, Jiho Han on bass, Brant Williams on guitar, and Armando Lopez playing saxophone, percussion, and synth.
David Smith is the owner of the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver, Colorado. Committed to presenting intelligent and culturally relevant exhibitions, the Gallery features the region’s most important emerging talent alongside internationally recognized artists. Through the Gallery’s curatorial program, participation in art fairs, and extensive media coverage in publications such as Art in America and ARTnews, David has cultivated a strong national and international audience. The New York Times hailed the Gallery as offering “an exciting contrast of cutting edge works”. The Gallery also maintains an active publishing division, which produces exhibition catalogues and editions.
David Smith graduated from Cornell University in 2000. He is on the Board of Directors of the DAM Contemporaries at the Denver Art Museum. He enjoys playing music and exploring the outdoors.
The Fresh Jazz and Crisp Vinyl Series focuses on jazz musicians living and working today, whose names are not yet embossed into history, but whose energy, wisdom, well worn instruments, and presence in the jazz scene are further defining our admiration for the life form, Jazz music. Selections from the vinyl archive will thus serve as a remembrance to all the jazz greats who came before the jazz musicians invited to play at this bi-monthly series.
