FRESH JAZZ AND CRISP VINYL SERIES FEAT. JOHN A. DIAZ-CORTES & THE FOLKLORIKA

12/19/2014

Tonight The Dikeou Collection presents the tenth installment of the ‘Fresh Jazz and Crisp Vinyl Series’ featuring a performance by John A. Díaz-Cortés & the Folklorika Arkestra from 7:00 to 10:0pm. To kick things off, DenverArts.org founder and editor Ken Hamel will DJ rare & classic jazz records from the Collection’s extensive Vinyl Archive. In the spirit of the holidays, this event will be especially festive with the official debut of Dikeou Collection artist Sarah Staton’s SupaStore SupaStars. But You Better Watch Out, because there will be a visit from Ol’ Saint Nick himself, keeping an eye on those who are naughty AND nice. This event is free and open to the public, light refreshments will be provided.

John A. Díaz-Cortés is an American saxophonist, composer and educator. Critics have described his sound as, “joyous, lyrical blues atop modern harmonic and percussive approaches to to the saxophone” (Hardbop Jazz Journal). The Folklorika Arkestra, formed in 2009, combines the improvisational aspects of live jazz with the traditional folk sounds and melodies of the Americas. The ensemble for this evening includes John A. Díaz-Cortés on saxophone and cajon, Annie Booth on piano, Jean-Luc Davis on bass, and Daniel Hogans on drums.

SupaStore SupaStars is a collection of ten black and white prints by artists affiliated with Sarah Staton’s long-running SupaStore project, which she started in London in the 1990s. The prints on exhibit at Dikeou Pop-Up: Colfax are by artists Simon Bill, Ellen Cantor, Tracey Emin, Anya Gallaccio, Georgie Hopton, Gary Hume, Simon Periton, Sarah Staton, Tomato, Tim Noble & Sue Webster.

You Better Watch Out is an ongoing performance piece by Devon Dikeou where a professional Santa Claus asks participants “if they have been bad or good” while partaking in cookies and milk left by the artist. Previous performances have taken place in New York, Austin, and at Dikeou Collection, but this will be Santa’s first visit to the Pop-Up, so be good for goodness sake!
