The Dikeou Collection continues the Family Saturday Workshop series on July 11 from 12:00 to 4:00pm, with a brief tour of the collection given at 2:00pm. This workshop will focus on artist Momoyo Torimitsu’s Somehow I Don’t Feel Comfortable installation and illustrations as featured at the Dikeou Collection and zingmagazine, and will be held at the Dikeou Collection, 1615 California St, Suite 515. Workshops are free to attend, and materials as well as light refreshments will be provided.
The giant pink inflatable bunnies that constitute Momoyo Torimitsu’s Somehow I Don’t Feel Comfortable greet Dikeou Collection visitors with happy grins and bright eyes. These unusual creatures are meant to disrupt and suspend viewers’ sense of reality, a concept that Torimitsu explores with her art. Her project in issue 15 of zingmagazine features sketches of the bunnies in various states of inflation and deflation, as well as interacting with other bunnies, providing a glimpse into their world when the lights go off and the doors shut for the night. This workshop will give participants the opportunity to expand on Torimitsu’s concept of suspending reality by developing and performing imaginary stories in relation to the bunnies.
Participants choose from a variety of scenarios to use as a prompt to create the story, like “escape mission,” “surprise party,” “journey to outer space,” and “good vs evil.” Families illustrate a storyboard for the narrative and then perform their story in front of the camera. Simple costume items and props will be provided. Final videos will be uploaded to the Dikeou Collection’s YouTube account. This project takes approximately 1.5-2 hours to complete.
The Dikeou Collection’s Family Saturday Workshops are a great way for people of all ages to learn more about contemporary art and experiment with new creative processes. Workshops include a tutorial and presentation of the artwork highlighted that month.
