SOUNDPAINTERS AND THE PLAYGROUND
11/19/2009
The Playground, Dikeou Collection and the Front Range Soundpainters present a community music-making event. Bring your instrument and come play with the Playground as we host an evening of genre bending new music.
It doesn’t matter how old you are, how long you’ve been playing, what instrument you play, or even if you can read music. Rock, jazz, classical, folk, bluegrass, electronic- all genre’s are welcome. Professional, amateur, beginner. It doesn’t matter. We want you there!!
Show up at 6:30 with your instrument and learn the Soundpainting language. Participate as a player or composer/ conductor.
At 7:30 we will “paint” a number of pieces with new conductor/ composers and instrumentation for each work. All participants are free to play, conduct or watch. This evening is about creativity and community. Come be a part!!
Soundpainting is a live composing sign language for the performing and visual arts. Soundpainting was created by New York composer Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, actors, poets, and visual artists working in the medium of structured improvisation. Presently, the language comprises more than 750 gestures that are signed by the composer/ conductor to indicate the type of improvisation desired of the performers. Direction of the composition is gained through the parameters of each set of signed gestures. – Taken from Soundpainting: The Art of Live Composition Workbook I by Walter Thompson. http://www.soundpainting.com/
The Playground Ensemble, Artists-in-Residence at DU’s Lamont School of Music, is a force for new music in the Rocky Mountain region. While maintaining a unique annual concert season featuring such composers as Arvo Part, Samuel Barber, and George Crumb, the Playground actively supports and cultivates Colorado’s thriving composition community.
In addition, the ensemble strives to reach out to new audiences with inventive programming and a free concert series. The ensemble is also active educationally, providing master-classes and concerts in various public and private institutions. The Playground’s goal is to provide stimulating performances, expand common perceptions of both contemporary music and the chamber ensemble, and nurture a community around this music that we love.
