The Dikeou Collection is pleased to announce the third installment of the ‘Fresh Jazz and Crisp Vinyl Series’ featuring a live performance by thenPurnell Steen Trio on Friday, October 18, 2013 from 6:00-9:00 pm at the Dikeou Collection. Ken Hamel, founder and editor of DenverArts.organd self-proclaimed vinyl enthusiast, will also conduct a unique DJ set, playing rare and classic jazz records from the Collection’s extensive vinyl archive. The Purnell Steen Trio is comprised of Fred Fuller, Jack McCutchan, and Purnell Steen and will began playing at 7:00pm.
Between the 1920s and 1950s, Denver had a thriving Jazz scene, and the heart of the scene was Denver’s Five Points neighborhood. Today, one of the main keepers of this flame is Purnell Steen. Now in his early 70s, Steen is a consummate performer who has a legion of devoted fans in his native Denver.
Imagine Count Basie’s swing combined with Duke Ellington’s “Love You Madly” charm, topped with a healthy dose of Wild West Spirit, and that’s Purnell Steen.
The ‘Fresh Jazz and Crisp Vinyl Series’ focuses on Jazz musicians living and working today, whose names are not yet embossed into history, but whose energy, wisdom, well worn instruments, and presence in the scene are further defining our admiration for this life form called Jazz music. Selections from the vinyl archive will thus serve as a remembrance to all the band leaders and sidemen alike who came before the musicians invited to play at this tri-monthly series.
This event is FREE and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
