By combining her love of collectibles and miniatures with her vivid imagination, Misaki Kawai creates complex and whimsical three-dimensional environments like her Mars Investigation Laboratory and Untitled (Large Plane). Her inspiration for the people that exist in these environments came from the homemade toys and dolls she saw on her journeys through Nepal. The faces of the characters she creates are those of people she knows, people she admires, or sometimes her own, giving her work a personal touch that ties in with the handmade aesthetic.
Using a photo of their own face, participants will create a personalized character inspired by Misaki’s style and process. Socks stuffed with cotton provide the core of the body, with fabric-lined pipe cleaners serving as the arms and legs. A photograph of the participant’s face will be transferred to the doll, and fabric with different colors and patterns will then be added to create the clothing and persona of the character. This workshop takes approximately 1-1.5 hours to complete.
The Dikeou Collection’s Family Saturday Workshops are a great way for people of all ages to learn more about contemporary art and experiment with new creative processes. Workshops include a tutorial and presentation of the artwork highlighted that month.
