Artist Statement
This sculpture was originally in the exhibition “Khlysty, the Owls and the Others,” my one person show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Altria branch in 2002. The setting was a large sculpture court which was also a public space open all day and into the evening. I decided to give the sculptures in the exhibition titles that were about the machinations and the positions within different milieus. The title of this piece, Otter, is a coded reference to a body type in the gay bear community. Formally, the sculpture is interactive, in that the viewer may walk in or sit inside of it, rather than just experience it only from outside it’s parameters. I think of this piece somewhat as a drawing in 3D. It is linear, deals with gradations of color, and can be looked at and through to it’s surroundings, activating the space, which is characteristic on many of my sculptures.
