Artist Statement
What if New York was completely covered by flooded water
What if the water receded
What if some people survived
What if I survived
What would be left behind
What if all we had left was the memory
What if all we had left was the skeleton of our city
Well I would start it all again
I would live where it all started Downtown
I would live in a whale carcass left behind
On St James Place
And I would go back to my secret places, hideouts
I would nurture the memory
I would connect with the people left behind
I would open a Pawn Shop and exchange gold
I would start a forum for rebuilding
I would keep in mind where we fucked up originally
I would try not to make the same mistake
That time is now
Where are you?
I am here.
Curator Statement
Agathe Snow’s installation is a power-packed conglomeration of trash picking, found objects, and her own form of kinetic sewing collage, that together creates the inside of the belly of a baby whale. Sludgie, the Whale takes its title from a name given to a real baby whale stranded in the Gowanus Canal, near New York Harbor. An apocalyptic air permeates the piece and signals what an urban atmosphere might be like if it encountered a natural disaster. Recalling Jonah, Pinocchio, and Moby Dick, all of which could be allegorical metaphors for this installation, the work reaches for repentance and ends in deliverance, and symbolizes the terror of questions, the blight of potential disaster, and the omnipotence of nature.
