Curator Statement
Sarah Staton’s work is about community. And peers. Following a modern tradition of Claus Oldenberg and Keith Haring she created a shop and named it . . . SupaStore. Everywhere—at museums, art fairs, even a portable curiosity cabinet that exhibits and shows artists’ editions, it grew into her own Big Box name brand (SupaStore is copyrighted). In 1998 Sarah collaborated with Tomato Editions in approaching a group of friends, some of which were emerging artists known as YBAs, to contribute something to the SupaStore legacy . . . What resulted is a series of 10 juicy artist prints in an edition of 50, plus a table of contents and Mission Statement. The edition includes the early meandering thoughts and images of all these people . . . long before corporate brands collaborated with museums and artists for products based on sales as commodities. Sarah Staton set the groundwork with a more personal take on what I like to call “individualized mass production.” And what a bunch of individuals . . .
