Artist Statement
In this group of drawings, I was using the expressive actions of the body. I was thinking about how I saw a couple in relation to one another—how two people have to work together or independently for expression. Through that particular fact, I found myself confronted with a more general nature of things.
Curator Statement
Juan Gomez makes his drawings/gouaches quickly and spontaneously. Poetically, they follow a European tradition popularized by Modern masters like Courbet, Manet, and Picasso, and allude to Contemporary photography traditions of Mapplethorpe and Richard Kern. By adapting life scenarios and recording the muse, Gomez documents sexual interaction, both metaphysically and literally. The gesture and line are as important as the captured moments—whether frenzied or calm, solipsistic or engaging, these drawings are mesmerizing. It goes without saying what the subject matter addresses, but more importantly, once a viewer recognizes the content, he recognizes the beauty that transpires from pure inspiration.
