Family Saturday Workshop: Margaret Lee Animal Prints
08/02/2014
For the August Family Saturday Workshop, the Dikeou Collection will participate in the Boogaloo Youth Arts Festival at the McNichols Building in Civic Center Park. This event, sponsored by Arts Street, features youth-oriented art and dance activities presented by various organizations throughout Denver. Dikeou Collection will host a workshop at Boogaloo from 10:30-12:00pmfocused on the work of artist Margaret Lee and her zebra skin paintings. This event is free and open to the public.
First exhibited at Jack Hanley Gallery in New York in 2011, Zebra (huh/what) follows Lee’s practice and focus on replication and the readymade art object. In an interview with Art in America Lee states, “The name of that zebra is Zebra (huh/what). And that kind of sums up my practice: yes it is a zebra, no it’s not a zebra.” For this workshop, participants will create their own animal-inspired readymade by painting animal prints on a piece of canvas cut to the shape of either a zebra, a giraffe, or a large cat (should we allow other animals? fish, birds, reptiles, etc). All materials will be provided courtesy of the Dikeou Collection.
The Boogaloo project gives young people and their families the opportunity to enjoy art to the fullest. Along with the arts, this event also celebrates entrepreneurship and environmentalism. All ages are welcome to join the interactive activities. The McNichols Building is located in Civic Center Park at 144 West Colfax Ave.
