Artist Statement

My art practice really began in the storage basement of Tibor de Nagy Gallery in 1985 where as an intern, sorting out old Artforums, I came across a project by Lucas Samaras. As I remember it, the project encompassed three full double page spreads in the magazine in which an Abstract Expressionist skeleton was painted and reproduced in various enlargements. The view zoomed with each progressive double page, beginning with a full body representation, zooming into an enlargement of the head, and finally ending on a close up of the voracious mouth. Printed across the entire skeleton was the word “artist”; on the head, “dealer”; and on the mouth, “collector”. The images are still powerfully embedded in my memory. The position and role-playing in question has continually occupied my thoughts and influenced my art. How these associated parties (artists, dealers, and collectors), as disparate emotional and physical entities, reclaimed their identity through the piece of art itself, and delicately combined/combated their destinies—at least for a fleeting moment—is of seminal importance to me and became the crux of my art work, and also engendered my practice as an artist, curator, writer/publisher, and collector.
