Originating in Colorado in 2011, the Flinching Eye Collective is a group of interdisciplinary media artists who work collaboratively at the intersections between sound, performance and technology. While building compositions out of saw blades or sewing machines, or using the human body as an electrical conduit, the act of listening becomes a key element of their enactments. Playfully shifting the audiences’ attention to different areas of the space, and implicating them along the way, the group accentuates the awkward, humorous, and intimate relationships humans have to the technologies that infiltrate daily life. Much of the Flinching Eye Collectives’s D.I.Y. aesthetic is conceptually grounded in re-fabricating or deconstructing instruments and tools, providing an alternative to the focus on utility in a pre-built society.

The Flinching Eye Collective: A Tour Document follows the group along the last three years of touring through different parts of the country and various art festivals in the southwest. Illuminating their performances and the myriad of perspectives that exist within the group about what they do The Flinching Eye Collective: A Tour Document gives insight into what it can be like to have a contemporary performance practice.
